PAICR’S FIRST MEETING OF THE MINDS HELPS MANAGERS AND CONSULTANTS SOLVE DATABASE ISSUES
Meeting Titled “Positioning Products in Consultant Databases” Was Attended by
Nearly 70 Managers and Consultants
PRINCETON JUNCTION, NJ – August 18, 2008 – Members of the Professional Association for Investment Communications Resources (PAICR), recognizing a growing gap between the needs of managers and consultants, worked together at PAICR’s first Meeting of the Minds entitled “Positioning Products in Consultant Databases” to begin to resolve common database issues on August 4.
Nearly 70 managers and consultants attended the meeting, either in-person at Analytic Investors' office in downtown Los Angeles, CA, or via conference call. Members from manager firms sat at the same table with consultant database managers and research analysts to determine what steps can be taken to improve upon database strategies, especially for products such as 130-30 strategies, hedge funds or derivatives-based investments. Consultants and database experts who provided their insights were Jill Banaszak and Debby Barri of A.S.A.P. Advisor Services, Steve Deutsch of Morningstar, Michelle Gabrielson of Informa, Rick Gagnon of Compass Institutional, Robin Kefer of Watson Wyatt, John Molesphini of eVestment Alliance, and Chris Tessman of Wilshire Associates Incorporated.
“Consultants depend on prompt and accurate data from managers in order to keep their clients informed, and to make their data analytic tools effective,” said Meeting of the Minds organizer and PAICR Vice President, Lisa Bosley. “Managers are facing renewed, or in the case of small or start-up managers, continual resource shortages, which hamper their ability to adequately maintain an overwhelming number of databases. The meeting participants expressed optimism that, as an organization, PAICR can help consultants and managers take some real steps to improve this highly important, but often overlooked aspect of investment marketing.”
Among the topics of discussion were the importance of checking databases for accuracy, a request for consistent well-defined terms, greater transparency on how data is collected and used, and a need for streamlined and clearer communications standards.
“My first PAICR roundtable experience was in 1998; nine participants got together to discuss RFP writing. The Meeting of the Minds event was remarkably different and showed just how far PAICR has come in ten years toward improving their social and educational gatherings to provide value for its members,” said Cara Crosetti, a PAICR board member. “The dialogue was lively and the consultants were very open to not only fielding questions, but listening to requests for standardization and improvements in the process of updating consultant databases.”
“Now in its tenth year, PAICR continues to provide an important forum for different specializations within investment industry marketing,” said PAICR president, Jill Brogan. “Due to the success of this meeting, we are already planning more for the coming year and these issues will, of course, be topics that we discuss at our Annual Conference in September.”
